The Niblick
The name of the LCC newsletter is “The Niblick.” What does the word “Niblick” mean and where did it originate?
The word “Niblick” comes from the early days of golf, back when the various clubs were named rather than numbered. A full set of irons would have been called (in order of longest iron to the shortest) the driving iron, mid iron, mid mashie, mashie iron, mashie, spade mashie, mashie niblick, lofting iron, and niblick. The niblick would have been the equivalent of what we call a #9 iron.
Over the years many people have asked what the term “Niblick” means. As an additional bit of information, the woods of that era were called (in order of longest to shortest) the Play club, brassie, spoon, and cleek. And, just to clear up any confusion, it’s Niblick; not Niblock or Niblink.
